Young Balkan Designers / Common Grounds
What’s design to Balkans and what’s Balkans to design?
Young Balkan Designers naturally evolved from Young Serbian Designers project
initiated and led by Mikser in 2009 and 2010. Growth from national (Serbian) to a
regional (South-East Europe) scope of the project came naturally, due to a very intense interest by young designers from entire region to participate in Mikser competitions owing to regional success of the Mikser festival and international success of the Young Serbian Designers project. Young Balkan Designers is a regional talent competition initiated to promote young talents of the
Balkan in the field of design. The main goal is to give young creative people an opportunity to express themselves, to realize their concepts and to learn about the production in industrial design. In 2014, YBD Competition has grown even further into Balkan Design Network Project.
Young Balkan Designers slogan for 2015; “Common Grounds calls for introspective
view on one’s own heritage and cultural values, vernacular roots, authenticities and imperfections, and their intelligent interpretation into contemporary Balkan context.“
Design concepts, products (furniture, lighting, interior elements, everyday objects,
home accessories, stationary, aid products), urban services, recycled materials, fashion garments, etc. that offer innovative yet rational solutions to everyday problems. Criteria appreciated by the Jury: threads of material and immaterial heritage woven into innovative features of the project that enhance the quality of contemporary community life; ergonomics; rational production costs; use of materials available locally; environmentally friendly production process; significant social impact
Balkan Design Network is an innovative platform established by Mikser Organization from Belgrade, Croatian Designers Association from Zagreb and Public Room from Skopje, with the aim of articulating and providing strategic support for the development and promotion of the Balkan design, both within the region and at Eu-ropean and international level. The aim is also to raise awareness of the importance of design in the processes of social and economic development, as well as promoting the design values among broader audience.

Istanbul themed gifts were designed by 10 students who were selected after a workshop training program. Each student designed their own Istanbul as a gift and the prototypes were prepared for the exhibition. The goal of Istanbul Academy of Design is to bring together design projects and producers who can actualize these projects to make their way to get into stores.
